Presenting to the eye with great depth, this rich ruby red wine has an unexpectedly powerful aromatic profile that is sure to heighten your senses. As I first tasted this wine, flavours of stewed dark cherries, sweet thyme, and floral elements were all components that could be detected as the wine opened. There was a background note that I couldn’t quite pinpoint until a light bulb went off … it was, of course, cranberry!

People often inquire about the right wine to pair with family dinners, Thanksgiving in particular. There are very common varietals that are utilized safely and with great success including Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Some experts that want to introduce less common varietals turn to Pinot Gris for a white choice, or Gamay for a red option. I too, have suggested all of the above in the past, but I may have found a local wine that can rival all of these. Jost Vineyards Leon Millot/Marechal Foch blend, which is exposed to no oak, showcases all of the things on my ‘turkey day’ checklist: medium body, abundant aspects of red fruits (preferably a bit tart and stewed), low tannin, medium acid, and definitely a bright and fruity presence. This wine has them all, and as a bonus, you can have your cranberry sauce and drink it too!

This weekend the holiday season officially takes off and we prepare to embrace not only the arrival of the majestic fall colours and brisk air, but precious time with family and friends. It is a time to celebrate all the gifts we have in this stunning part of the world. Why not toast to good health and loved ones with some delicious wine made with passion by our own local neighbours … Happy Thanksgiving!
