This week The Wine Lifestyle introduces our first red wine of the series - Great Big Friggin’ Red. A new red wine by Jost Vineyards, it was created by winemaker Jonathan Rodwell to celebrate summer and Nova Scotia’s winemaking heritage.
Deep ruby in color with a light-hearted name, GBFR is the perfect wine to toast Canada’s 150th with friends and family. The vibrant nose includes aromas of red currants and plum, and the palate displays similar fresh red fruits with some added baking spice qualities. The gentle tannins contribute to the soft texture allowing you to relish the juicy composition of this wine.
When considering the right time to open a wine that proclaims itself “a BBQ fiend”, I can’t help but think of something we all love to eat. You guessed it… a grilled burger! What is better than a nice juicy burger with an equally juicy red wine to hit the spot? The Bacon Jam Burger by Chef Susan Carroll at Paddy’s Pub in Wolfville is a fantastic version with a creative twist. The perfectly cooked beef patty is topped with caramelized bacon and onions. Jalapeño Havarti provides a hint of heat and crispy onions add a nice textural component.
To try this inspired pairing on your own, grab a bottle of GBFR and fire up your grill. Savouring this flavour explosion in the comfort of your own back yard makes every day Canada Day … cheers!
