Mercator Vineyards sits on a bluff overlooking the historic Acadian dykelands where the Cornwallis River enters the Minas Basin. The vineyards are located just to the east of Wolfville, Nova Scotia and west of the Grand Pré National Heritage site. Mercator wines challenge our perceptions of “local” wine. Mercator takes us into a world of premium, estate-select and cellared wines that can rival the best the world has to offer.
Mercator Vineyards Featured Wines
Mercator Tidal Bay 2017
Mercator Vineyards’ prime location near the Bay of Fundy provides optimal sun exposure and cool tidal breezes—the perfect conditions to ripen grapes for Tidal Bay, Nova Scotia’s signature appellation.
Mercator Tidal Bay is a blend of Vidal Blanc, L’Acadie Blanc and Petite Milo. Grown in our unique coastal terroir, these grapes express characteristics that contribute to the overall complexity of the wine.
This wine is focused and vibrant with distinct citrus notes of fresh lemon and grapefruit rind supported by a prominent backbone of minerality. The palate is crisp and refreshing yet carries enough body and a hint of sweetness to create a persistent finish. Wonderful on its own or the perfect complement to Atlantic Canada’s seafood.
Mercator South Slope Seyval Blanc 2016
Our South Slope Seyval Blanc is a balanced, subtle white wine created from The South Slope area of the vineyard, which provides the perfect combination of conditions to grow these exceptional, delicate Seyval Blanc grapes.
Mercator River Bend Petite Milo 2016
Our River Bend Petite Milo is a full-bodied, fruit forward, off-dry white wine. The River Bend area of the vineyard provides optimal conditions to grow these perfectly terroir suited, cool climate Petite Milo grapes.
Mercator Sauvage Sur Lie 2016
Mercator Sauvage Sur Lie is a blend of Petite Milo, a cold-hardy grape variety well suited to the new frontier of Nova Scotia’s cool climate, and Chardonnay, a well-travelled grape variety most famously identified with the white wines of Burgundy and Chablis in France.
Both varieties are naturally fermented in re-bent, toasted French oak barrels in a method referred to as a “Sauvage” or “Wild” fermentation. This natural approach is the source of complexity and expressions of oak in the wine which further develop through its ageing sur lie.
Aromas of fresh herbs, apple peel and lemon rind give way to a smooth complexity with elements of celery, lime and pear supported with acidity, which act as a platform for the weight on the palate and persistency in the finish.
Mercator Reserve Marquette 2015
Our vineyard is the perfect location, with ideal soil and temperatures, for this exceptional Marquette to thrive.
Mercator Reserve Marquette 2015 is a complex, soft, dark, generously tannined, red wine made in the Italian Passito tradition.
Mercator Upper Ridge Marquette 2016
This Mercator Marquette is dark ruby in colour with moderate tannins and flavours of dark fruits such as cherry and blackberry. In comparison to its European counterparts it is similar to ripe Pinot Noir or Gamay Noir.
Mercator En Cave Cinq Ans 2012
Mercator En Cave 2012 is a proprietary blend of predominately Pinot Noir along with select components of classic Nova Scotia reds. It expresses fresh black cherry and raspberry with hints of violet and underlying notes of oak and spice.
The light acidity and supple fruit profile combine with the soft tannin backbone to create a rounded wine that is wonderful on its own or as a compliment to a broad culinary range from planked salmon to venison and mushroom risotto.
Barrel aged for 12 months, bottled and cellared “Sur Lattes” for 4 years, this wine is drinking well now but will continue to evolve in your cellar for years to come.
